Make a Difference Award winner Lily Metcalf hopes to inspire others living with Type 1 Diabetes
At age 14 our 2023 MAD award-winner, Lily Metcalf, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. As an aspiring professional footballer, this knocked Lily’s confidence. She was embarrassed by her diagnosis and believed she wasn’t good enough.
Now, two years later, Lily wants to inspire others with diabetes through her work with Dan’s Trust and Diabetes UK. Last month, Lily was invited to discuss her diabetes journey with Talia Lazarus, the founder of igotbackup. During the recorded podcast Lily explained that she understands that her diabetes it is not a setback, and that she can continue to achieve her dreams regardless of her diagnosis. Now signing contracts with pro football clubs, Lily has understood the importance of a forward and positive mindset, and if you put your mind to anything, diabetes won’t stop you from doing what you want to do.
She said: “You control diabetes, diabetes doesn’t control you… now think, that relates to all aspects of life.”
